Painting from reference photographs

Ullswater Mooring

I think this would make a great reference photo for a watercolour painting.
These shouldn't be copied to every pixel, but used as an idea, or for scale.
The horizon of the lake could be moved lower to give more drama in the sky.

More detail could then be added to the boat.

I would ignore the canoeists, not that I dislike canoeists, I would want to create a sense of space and tell a story about the single boat.

The mountains could be painted with more atmosphere and misty conditions with wet in wet and plenty of water. The trees on the shore could give a strong tonal value against the light tones of the lake. This would add more drama to the painting.

I would also imagine a few more reflections under the gorgeous Red sailing boat.

The float could be masked out with masking fluid?

The lake could shimmer with a little wax added.

I would keep to a limited palette of around four to five primary colours Cadmium Red been a definite contender.

So all it needs now is paint to paper.

A new year a new Hobby

A great big Happy Inspiring New Year to you.

How's the painting going? It's quite hard to get back into it after a short break.  I want to paint so much but at times find it difficult to focus on exactly what!! So the other day I had a play and painted one of my online projects

Windermere Sunset
This is the third project of the first course

I've a few new students all starting the course and this is what one of them had to say after completing the first painting.

Thanks for the encouraging comments!

I found the project gave me lots of new things to think about, especially the use of water to soften colour once it was applied to the paper. Also, I have commandeered my daughters hair dryer, which she is so far being understanding about. :)

The next project looks like another step up so looking forward to getting started. I might take your advice and do a couple of versions before sending back to you.

I can't wait to see his next painting. If you fancy joining and stating a new hobby for 2016. I love painting and see things so differently because of this. Definitely recommend it

Online Watercolour course is £55.00 for six projects, including sketches, colour tags and material list. With feedback and more helpful tips after each project is completed.

Weekend painting course in Lake District

What a super few days painting at Grasmere and Rydal. To paint in the Lake District is a wonderful experience. The Easedale valley has so many interesting and beautiful scenes. We started on Monday with an easy walk to the old stepping stones painting next to the bubbling stream. Tuesday found us on the shores of Rydal water and in the gardens of Rydal full of  colourful Rhododendrons. Wednesday was demonstration morning of watercolours and pastel with the afternoon painting in wild flower meadows. Warm still days gave perfect painting weather.

I have organised another weekend  Friday 7th to Sunday 9th August.

The Price £220.00 includes  Bed and Breakfast at the Glenthorne, Grasmere Friday and Saturday evening this course is suitable for Beginners and Dabblers in watercolour who would like to experience painting outdoors in the beautiful Lake District.

Painting Spring Flowers in Watercolor

Spring is on it's way, which means lots of beautiful flowers to paint, time to
get the primary colours out. I love painting flowers, especially when you have a vase
of pretty blooms  next to you, they can be extremely  challenging!! But great fun
The problem I find is not getting enough tonal values and the colour Yellow is a prime example!

I do think it makes a good couple of hours watercolour practise. I applied washes with lots of water onto the Arches not paper. Clean water at all times, thought about colour complimentary and light next to dark.

The most beautiful river in the Lakes

A few days back in the Lakes and what better place to visit, than beautiful Borrowdale valley. Walking from Grange towards Rosthwaite is pure joy especially with the last of the Autumn colours and a touch of morning frost. This little part of the Lakes is such a wonderful walk, along the riverside, with fells sparkling in the morning sunshine. The river which is called 'the Upper Derwent'  the most beautiful river, the colour of the clear water ranges from emerald to bright Greens to Ochres.

I see watercolours and pastels all  brought to life. But we were wandering up the river in search of Salmon, scrambling along quietly gazing into the crystal waters. No fishing rods or paints just enjoying the sheer beauty of this special place and nature.

I am going to paint this wonderful scene in watercolours, with just a limited colour palette I'll keep you updated on how it goes.
If you would like to learn to paint in watercolours but unsure where to begin or what brushes and colours to use, the Online course is a perfect start www.watercolourcourse.co.uk  With lots of feedback and easy step by step I will show you all the techniques and secrets I have learnt over the years.

Can you see the Salmon? Not in this photo but the colours in the water are so pretty.
