New Year , new ideas

Moving back to North Yorkshire has opened my eyes to new painting ideas and subjects.
Winter Trees have certainly caught my attention. In the Lakes, the fells often took the glory, but here in North Yorkshire with wide open Skies and endless vistas, the Trees are beautifully silhouetted.

Winter Trees, North Yorkshire, Mixed Media

Trying out new techniques is always exciting, I started with a piece of watercolour paper applied gesso over a painting that I wasn't pleased with.

Acrylic ink was added first using Browns, magenta and Black. Clingflm was added on top and left to dry. Next came masking fluid for the Trees. With the masking fluid dry, Acrylic paint was used to paint the sky.

Now came the exciting bits.

How to remove the masking ?

A penknife and palette knife.

Final touches with more Acrylic ink and a few Oil pastels.

I hope this inspires , your new Year

January Painting Challenge

Managing the January Blues,I've set my mission high, a painting/sketch a day as well as some kind of exercise. I've found over the years that I need the inspiration of the great outdoors and pounding the fells of the Lakes brings this easily together.

Inspiration Found: New Years Day walking the lofty Walla Crag ridge, with big open views towards Borrowdale and Beyond. What caught my eye was the stunning light Shafts hitting the shores of Derwentwater.

Watercolours full of promise

Autumn Morning.
Painted in Watercolours.

A truly magical time of the year to paint, after the Greens of Summertime what a delight to have Warm bright coloured hues. Gaps in trees, not full of foliage, beautiful light and in the Lakes long and tempting reflections of days going by.

Misty mornings with valleys full of soft floating clouds, to not want to paint or capture this wonderful time of year would be such a shame.

This morning I received two wonderful Online paintings, both beginners but both well painted full of promise and eager for the next painting project.

With feedback after each painting, I hope students take each new step with more confidence, that is one of the important keys to successful watercolour painting.

Painting from reference photographs

Ullswater Mooring

I think this would make a great reference photo for a watercolour painting.
These shouldn't be copied to every pixel, but used as an idea, or for scale.
The horizon of the lake could be moved lower to give more drama in the sky.

More detail could then be added to the boat.

I would ignore the canoeists, not that I dislike canoeists, I would want to create a sense of space and tell a story about the single boat.

The mountains could be painted with more atmosphere and misty conditions with wet in wet and plenty of water. The trees on the shore could give a strong tonal value against the light tones of the lake. This would add more drama to the painting.

I would also imagine a few more reflections under the gorgeous Red sailing boat.

The float could be masked out with masking fluid?

The lake could shimmer with a little wax added.

I would keep to a limited palette of around four to five primary colours Cadmium Red been a definite contender.

So all it needs now is paint to paper.

Rambles with an artist Latrigg

Latrigg, a small hill with stunning views over Keswick and the surrounding fells. This four mile walk is perfect for a couple of spare hours, when you need a little inspiration. Two Lakes Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, a glimpse into Borrowdale and Newlands valleys and a few of the highest peaks Helvellyn and Skiddaw. On a clear day Scafell Pike can be viewed  from the bench positioned ideally on top.

An ideal start is Spooney Lane, a quiet bridleway that crosses the busy A66. Pass Spooney Green a Bed and Breakfast with a variety of Hens running freely in the gardens. You should notice the sounds of birdsong  walking  by the side of Brundleholme Wood. Red squirrels are about so do keep a look out. Head straight up the track between Yellow Gorse, Broom and wild flowers. Glimpse through the shaded trees, a patchwork of Green fields towards the tiny hamlet of  Applethwaite and  Bassenthwaite. This is the steepest section of the walk and only lasts a short time.

Follow the path round to the left ignoring the gates on the right into Brundleholme wood. The first viewpoint towards Derwentwater is reached. I often stop and sketch, not able to wait any longer.
Sun rays glisten and sparkle  on the Lake and light up the sides of the fells into the valley of Newlands. A painters paradise. This low level viewpoint is often more sheltered than the summit top of Latrigg.

Back to the path and through the peaceful woods leading to a gate to reveal views towards Grizedale Pike and on to Bassenthwaite. Flat pastures with old Chestnut trees dotted around casting useful shadows. The mighty flanks of Skiddaw are well viewed ahead, covered in Heather, a wonderful spectacle of colour in the month of August. Especially with the light on a late Summers evening.
The path soon comes to a crossroads, take the right hand path and zig zag up the side of Latrigg.

Newlands from Latrigg
Painted in Pastels

Views open up, a few Sheep grazing on the hillside could be an useful lead in for a photograph
Nearing the top, the Bench will be spotted, fingers crossed it as no weary walkers sitting taking in the lofty view.
The Slate roofs of Keswick below towards Derwentwater, Borrowdale  with Great End and Scafell Pike on the distant horizon. Helvellyn and the Dodds on the left with Grizdale Pike and Bassenthwaite shouting for attention on the right.
This is a perfect place to stop for a break, just watch out for the strong winds if you do get the painting materials out and a few walkers passing by.

Head back down the track you came up, plenty of photograph opportunities along the way. After reaching the first viewpoint, cross the tiny stream and head through the gate into the woods. In the month of June wild foxgloves will skirt the track through the woods, a wonderful sight to see, especially with the sunshine lighting the way through the pretty woodland.

Foxgloves, Brundleholm Wood painted in Pastels.

The path comes to a crossroads, take a right to head back and join the Spooney Lane track and back to the start of the walk.
The filling Station, on Crosswaite Road is an ideal place to stop for Coffee and cake or for a well earned pint the Pheasant Inn opposite.

Sketchbook Walks in the footsteps of Beatrix Potter

Catbells home of Mrs Tigglewinkle.

I grew up with the books of Beatrix Potter her words and beautiful paintings inspired me, to paint and have an interest in wildlife. On visiting the Lake District many years ago, my first stop was Hill Top at Near Sawry to see where this wonderful lady had lived and painted.
Now living not too far from Derwentwater  is a pure joy, to be inspired along the lake shore when taking my sketchbook on a walk. Stopping when something catches my eye for a quick sketch. I find this an ideal way to get material to work from at a later stage or back in the studio, you see much more than a photograph.

Viridian Gallery 'Mountain High' exhibition.

Mountain High
Saturday 23rd April – Sunday 5th June
Viridian Gallery Keswick

I have  exhibited at Viridian Gallery for nearly fifteen years and was delighted to be asked to paint a collection of work for the Spotlight on Exhibition 'Mountain High'. From an early age I discovered a  great love of painting outdoors, Enjoying  walking amongst inspiring high fell and mountain scenery led me to paint what I really love, capturing dramatic light conditions on lakes, mountain ridges and tarns, especially in winter moods.

After a break of eighteen months living in the French Alps, I have come back to the Lake District with fresh eyes full of inspiration for painting the scenery I truly love. Walking in wild winter weather to locations, feeling the conditions and taking in the magnificent atmosphere of the Lake District all have a direct response on my paintings. Using mainly Pastels has helped to create vivid yet muted beautiful colours of Lakeland fells in my new work. I find working with Pastels is a direct and tactile approach and gives me confidence and also pure joy in painting dramatic valleys, high mountain tops and capturing the light playing with the Lakeland fells.
